Gender and fashion

Too often, the world recognizes life as binary. There is yin and yang, beer and wine, male and female. Grey area between opposites is nonexistent, binding the way of living for people to adhere to social, and especially gender norms. Fashion also falls victim to binary categories with brands creating solely for men or women. Streetwear began as a vessel for men to express themselves through their graphic T-shirts or branded hoodies. As it began to popularize outside the surf and skate community, the boundaries of menswear streetwear and womenswear streetwear faded, giving streetwear a new identity of being genderless. Inspirations behind Saint York's designs

For Saint York, design inspiration comes from every incidents of life. Example: joking about turning iconic Indonesian paintings (e.g. Raden Saleh’s Penangkapan Pangeran Diponegoro) into graphic tees turned into a theme of one of their collection, because an old saying goes, a fashion collection is worth a thousand words.   Saint York’s first collection was named Generation Female, marking the start of the women-owned fashion brand and the vision of dressing the future generation of stylish women. In this day and age, who isn’t familiar with streetwear? Crazed among today’s society, streetwear has become a staple for people of all ages.Being highly influenced by Western culture, streetwear first emerged in Indonesia in the 2000s after Californian skateboarding and surfing cultures dominated Indonesian’s urban. Q&A with Saint York Founders: Novi and Illy

Novi Utami and Lubna Sherrin (who prefers to be called Illy), are two young fashion designers, changing the Indonesian fashion industry with their sustainable and ethical streetwear brand, Saint York. How did you two first meet? N: We first met at one of our classes during college at the Academy of Art University. Before that, I think we had actually passed by each other randomly outside class.
